A little sky.
A new perspective.
You are more than a star sign. Discover the language of astrology, one beautiful idea at a time.
An old language.
A fresh conversation.
Astrology gives the sky a symbolic meaning. A birth chart is its starting point: a map of celestial positions for a particular time and place.
Its history stretches through ancient Babylonian sky-watching, Greek chart traditions and many later cultures. This guide focuses on modern Western tropical astrology.
Think of it as a set of questions to explore, rather than a fixed description of who you must be. The interpretations here belong to a tradition; they are not scientific measurements of personality or predictions of your future.
More than one sign. Start with three.
Your Sun sign is one part of a much bigger picture. These three ideas are a welcoming place to begin.
What lights you up
In modern Western astrology, the Sun represents identity, purpose and the qualities you want to express. Your usual ‘star sign’ is your Sun sign.
What feels like home
The Moon is used to explore feelings, familiar reactions and emotional comfort. It adds another layer to the Sun sign, rather than replacing it.
How you meet the world
The Rising sign, or Ascendant, is the sign on the eastern horizon at birth. Astrologers connect it with your approach to new situations. It needs an accurate birth time and place.
No exact birth time? Leave the Rising sign and houses open. A Moon sign can also be uncertain on a day when it changes signs.
Twelve signs. Many ways to be.
Each sign adds a different tone to a chart. You have all twelve somewhere in the wheel; your Sun sign is only one placement.
Aries
Mar 21 – Apr 19The courage to begin
Aries is associated with initiative, directness and the excitement of a fresh start.

Scorpio
Oct 23 – Nov 21Beneath the surface
Scorpio is associated with emotional depth, trust and the courage to face what is difficult to name.
Sagittarius
Nov 22 – Dec 21A wider horizon
Sagittarius follows discovery, big questions and the desire to learn through experience.
Capricorn

Pisces
Feb 19 – Mar 20Room for wonder
Pisces is linked with imagination, sensitivity and compassion for experiences beyond our own.
Dates are approximate Sun-sign dates, not a chart calculation. Around a boundary, the year and exact birth time matter. Tropical signs are equal sections of the zodiac, not the star constellations.
Four elements.
A different kind of chemistry.
The elements group the signs by a shared style. A chart usually contains a mixture.
Fire
Feel the spark.
Action, enthusiasm and creative drive.

Stays with something and gives it shape.
Adjusts, connects and makes room for change.
The chart looks complex. The idea is simple.
Read it in layers: a planet is a theme, a sign adds a style, and a house gives it a place in everyday life.
The part of life being explored.
The style it takes.
The area of life it touches.
Mercury in Gemini, in the third house.
In this example, communication (Mercury) takes a curious, conversational style (Gemini) in everyday learning and local connections (third house). A reflection might be: “Where could a good question help me connect?”
The planets The themes.
Astrology includes the Sun and Moon in its planetary vocabulary, although astronomically they are a star and a moon. Modern practice also uses Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

The angles make a conversation.
Aspects are angles between chart positions. Astrologers use them to describe how two themes interact. These five are a good place to start.
Conjunction
TogetherTwo themes are closely joined. The result depends on which planets meet.
Sextile
OpportunityTwo themes can support each other when you make use of the opening.
Square
FrictionTwo themes pull in different directions, inviting effort and adjustment.
Trine
FlowTwo themes are read as working together with relative ease.
Opposition
BalanceTwo themes face each other, asking you to consider both sides.
An aspect need not be exact: astrologers allow a small margin called an “orb”. The size of that margin varies with the method used.
You do not have to learn
the whole sky at once.
Notice one thing.
Start with a sign or theme that interests you. Read its meaning without trying to make everything fit.
Ask a better question.
Try “Where do I recognise this?” and “Where do I not?” Your own experience gets the final word.
Take it into your day.
Write down a thought, talk with a friend or choose one small action. Curiosity is enough.
Take the sky
with you.

Is astrology the same as astronomy?
Astronomy is the scientific study of space. Astrology assigns symbolic meanings to celestial positions. Its claims to predict personality or events are not scientifically established. Here, it is a starting point for entertainment and self-reflection.
Why does this guide use the tropical zodiac?
Western tropical astrology divides the zodiac into twelve equal 30-degree signs, starting with Aries at the March equinox. These signs are not the same as the uneven star constellations. Sidereal traditions use a different reference point, so placements can differ.
Can I work out my Rising sign from my birthday?
A birthday alone is not enough. A reliable Ascendant needs the birth date, accurate local time, location and correct time-zone information. This page explains the ideas; it does not calculate your chart or collect birth details.
What if I do not know my birth time?
You can still explore the basic language. Do not guess your Rising sign or houses. A Moon sign can also be uncertain if the Moon changed signs that day. Some planetary signs may be readable from the date, but a chart calculation should show the uncertainty.
What does Mercury retrograde mean?
Retrograde motion is when a planet appears to move backwards against the background sky from Earth. It does not physically reverse its orbit. Astrologers often use Mercury retrograde as a reflection theme for reviewing plans or communication; it does not mean that something must go wrong.
Are some signs more compatible than others?
Astrologers may compare whole charts, but one Sun-sign pairing cannot tell you whether a relationship will work. Communication, care, shared values and real behaviour matter. Treat sign descriptions as conversation starters rather than rules about people.
